50 Years of Women's Varsity Athletics at Duke

Duke Athletics is proud to celebrate 50 Years of Women’s Varsity Athletics. A commemoration of the rich history of women’s sports at Duke University will take place in conjunction with Duke Women's Weekend in March 2023.

About Duke Women's Athletic Programs

Duke University sponsors thirteen women athletic programs which have collectively won 8 team national titles, 12 individual national titles and 64 ACC championships: basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, rowing, track & field, cross country, tennis, lacrosse, golf, fencing, field hockey and swimming & diving. The first women’s varsity athletics program to be sponsored by Duke was field hockey beginning in 1972. Most recently, softball became the latest women’s sports program added to our Blue Devil family with their first season of competition taking place in 2018. 

Support our 50 for 50
Fundraising Project

The 50 for 50 Fundraising Project was launched to recognize the female student-athletes who have represented Duke University and their sport with tremendous character and dedication. The goal of the project is to raise $2.5 million this fiscal year through 50 gifts of $50,000 or more in support of Duke Women’s Athletics.
